This started off the wild afternoon of action, as Iron Sharpens Iron (2-0) was red hot right away and in control of the game in what turned out to be a 19-14 win over Clovis.
A quick stop early and a botched snap on the punt gave ISI great field position early on, then capitalizing quickly with a touchdown strike from Terrence Ballard to Markel Taylor to take a 7-0 lead.
That lead grew in the second quarter, with Lincoln-Stockton junior athlete Jonah Coleman beginning what would be a massive day by bullying his way on a catch and runing 35 yards to the end zone, and Iron Sharpens Iron had a 13-0 lead after the two-point try was no good.
Iron Sharpens Iron was dominating and had all momentum going into half and had tons of energy during the break, but the game flipped as the second half hit.
ISI started the second half with an interception, but Clovis could not take advantage of it. Clovis then got another interception, bringing this one all the way to the house while trimming the lead to 13-7.
The defensive onslaught did not end there, as the very next drive saw another pick six, which handed Clovis a 14-13 advantage without the offense even touching the field.
Despite Iron Sharpens Iron’s fifth turnover, the defense came up with a stand to add to its marvelous outing following the giveaway in the fourth quarter with the clock winding down
Coleman would not let his team fall, going up and taking the ball over two people for a 35-yard score, giving Iron Sharpens Iron the lead once again at 19-14. And after the defense made a goal line stand after that, ISI walked away from Corona with a close win to remain undefeated.
Coleman – whose offer list features Arizona State, Colorado, Fresno State, New Mexico, Oregon State, San Jose State and Tennessee – was the star of the show, catching the ball four times for 76 yards and a pair of score, including the game-winner.
Terrance Ballard, a quarterback from Del Campo High School, threw for 95 yards and three touchdowns, with his other score coming on a 5-yard strike to Sacramento’s Markel Taylor.
