One of the top Sacramento coaches of 2024 stepped down from his post.
Oakmont head football coach Jake Messina confirmed with West Coast Preps he stepped down from guiding the program after engineering quite the turnaround in his three-year run.
Messina led Oakmont to new heights in 2024, going 8-4 and vying for the Pioneer Valley league crown until the very final week after a winless 2023 campaign when it was outscored by an outscored by a combined 344-103. This fall also included a momentous 42-13 victory over Dixon in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 5 playoffs, marking Oakmont’s first playoff victory on the gridiron since 2002, and a historic run of going unbeaten at home.
Messina was also named a Midseason Sacramento Coach of the Year candidate and will surely make the postseason finalists list.
Everywhere Messina has coached, his teams have won. Previously, he led Carlmont High School in the Bay Area and of the Central Coast Section, where he snapped a three-decade playoff drought for the program and reached the section championship game.
