Elias Herrera breaks loose

Oak Grove senior running back Elias Herrera dazzled for Xclusive Speed on Saturday.

Herrera notched 49 rushing yards on two carries, adding another 17 receiving yards on two catches. His 52-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter tied the game at 14-14 before Winner Circle Athletics eventually pulled out the win.

The Oak Grove standout has been a winner every step of the way in high school, including helping the Eagles to 10 wins and a runner-up finish in the Central Coast Section Division II championship.

Iron Sharpens Iron’s stifling defense

Iron Sharpens Iron’s defense has been a star throughout the action in Southern California.

ISI registered a shutout in a 20-0 win over Team Hustle, improving its record to 3-1 with one week remaining before the postseason.

Over the past three games, ISI has allowed a combined 29 points – under 10 points per game. Its previous outings were 15 points last week in a 15-7 overtime loss to Sunset and 14 points in week No. 2 in a 19-14 win versus Clovis.

Aden Jackson’s consistency

Riordan senior receiver Aden Jackson’s consistency is a big part in Cal Strength’s road to a 3-1 record in the Winner Circle Athletics Champions League.

Jackson totaled a team-high 52 yards on four catches for Cal Strength in its 21-14 defeat to OC Elite, its first loss of the season after winning the first three contests.

Over the past three weeks, Jackson has 123 on nine catches – including two consecutive weeks of 50-plus yards. He finished with 51 yards on four catches in Cal Strength’s 29-0 victory demolition of OC Elite last week.

Xclusive Speed’s resilience

No opponent’s lead is safe against Xclusive Speed.

Despite falling in 21-14 fashion to Winner Circle Athletics, which gives Xclusive Speed a 2-2 record heading into the final week of the regular season, Xclusive Speed never quit – a mantra for this team throughout its first four weeks.

Xclusive Speed went down 14-0 with a minute left in the first half and immediately bounced back in the second half. Pittsburg senior quarterback Eli Brickhandler connected with Valley Christian sophomore receiver for a touchdown, and Oak Grove senior running back Elias Herrera later had a 52-yard touchdown run to tie the score up at 14-14 before WCA eventually pulled out the thrilling win.

Earlier this season, Xclusive Speed mounted another incredible comeback that would turn out to be its first victory of the season. Down 21-6, it rallied for 21 straight points – highlighted by a touchdown strike from Brickhandler to Denmark (Georgia) receiver Azari Brown in the final seconds for the 27-21 victory.
